As far as the characters of comic books are concerned, Venom is a very obvious candidate for R rating. And for quite some time an R rating seemed to be very much in play for the solo film of Sony for the villain of Spider-Man starring Tom Hardy. Eventually, Venom was PG-13, not R rated, but that does not mean its sequel cannot explore an R rating. In an interview, the producer of Venom, Matt Tolmach said that this sequel shall be considering an R-rated version because of the box office of success of the Joker and said that one always had to think about it, now that it had worked. He said that their movie had worked really well.
While projects such as Blade, Kick-Ass, and Watchmen laid the groundwork, it was actually Deadpool and Logan that started changing the narrative about how it was possible for an R-rated comic book movie to succeed. Then Joker came out and absolutely blew all of the beliefs regarding the limitations of such a movie that is completely out of the water. Such kind of unprecedented success cannot be ignored. As a producer, Matt Tolmach must take it into account for the production of Venom 2.
