Irish broadcaster RTÉ has done reiteration in their commitment for at least 20 percent of their sports output to focus on women in 2020.
Director-General of RTE, Dee Forbes, made the preliminary pledge for increasing coverage to 20 percent on International Women’s Day 2019.
She stated that they are still on track for achieving this, addressing at the Sport for Business Women Sport Conference.
In order to achieve this aim, the broadcaster has made an announcement regarding the creation of a new measurement tool, to make sure that they track the coverage of women’s sport across radio, TV, and digital.
Also addressed at the conference, Deputy Head of TV Sport, RTÉ, Cliona O’Leary, further shed light on the broadcaster’s aims. He passed a statement that said that they are targeting 20 percent for TV sport in terms of pundits, content, and presenters. In addition to this, they also have a 20 percent target on female presenters across news programming and radio.
She also elaborated on the reason why they created a bespoke measurement tool. The measurement tool is highly significant first so that they can get an accurate baseline for all of what they do.
From there, it will be a source of more ease, as long as the partner embarks with us on this journey, to really work towards reflecting better the diversity of sport that is out there, including for women.
They are inspired by and trying to follow the footsteps of Swedish National Broadcaster STV who accomplished to raise their own coverage of women in sport from 25 percent to 45 percent by means of measuring and tracking their output and deliberately putting more and more resources into finding and sharing the finest stories.
